Grand Meetings in America’s Adventure Land: Grand Sierra Resort and Casino

Reno, Nevada

By Stacy Lytwyn Maxwell

Since its inception as the first-ever destination resort in northern Nevada, the resort has anteed up the bar and has earned a world-class reputation among meeting and conference attendees as well as discerning travelers seeking an extraordinary romantic getaway.

MGM Grand. Bally's. Reno Hilton. Opened in 1978, the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, has had different names, numerous facelifts and constantly redefines itself in its quest to be the best. The one commodity that is timeless as well as paramount is the resort’s luxury lifestyle theme. First built as the world’s largest hotel casino consisting of 26 stories and 1,015 rooms on a 145-acre property at the cost of 130 million dollars, the stakes are high to uphold the status.

Since its inception as the first-ever destination resort in northern Nevada, the resort has anteed up the bar and has earned a world-class reputation among meeting and conference attendees as well as discerning travelers seeking an extraordinary romantic getaway.

Although the motto is “Get lucky at GSR,” there is no “get lucky” about it; once visitors arrive at this 5500 elevation resort in the Sierra Mountains (just 20 minutes to Lake Tahoe, they “are” lucky. The jackpot is staying at the resort, which ranks 15th in the nation as the largest hotel and convention center.

Adjacent to the intersection of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 395, the shining star takes center stage on the Reno skyline. During the day, the glint of the sunlight, and at night, the multi-colored spotlights on the gold-tinted windows transform the resort into a diamond tiara that crowns the thoroughfare.

Inside, the enterprise, which these days measures over 3.4 million total square feet and comprises 27 stories, the dazzle is not lost. Whether guestroom, ballroom, or bathroom and everything in between, the resort brims with rich, bold colors and classic architectural features bent on Deco design. Accentuated with upscale, modern plush furnishings like leather, faux fur, suede, mirrored tables, Lucite lamps coupled with all the amenities that one can dream of, the resort can be equated to a martini heaven that never evaporates. A good selection of the resort’s 1,995 guestrooms and suites afford panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains or the Truckee River and Meadows.

The two-choice category among guestrooms, which run at least 425 square feet, is grand or grander! “The top 11 floors are actually hotel condominiums called the Summit, they are our luxury brand,” says Advertising/PR Manager, Melissa Haughey.

What can you expect at the Summit? For starters, custom dry bar cabinetry, black granite countertops, stainless steel mini refrigerators, microwaves and flat-screen TVs in both living room and bath. The spa-inspired bathrooms tout imported floor to ceiling marble and full-glass shower doors. No matter what guestroom you reserve, love is the dominant language in a superb atmosphere where 24-hour service rules and the frills never end.

A “one-stop resort,” that is how Melissa defines the resort (with complimentary airport shuttle and on-premises parking to boot!), just a five-minute drive from the Reno/Tahoe International Airport and a 45-minute drive to Lake Tahoe.

“We have shopping, we have restaurants, we have nightlife, we have entertainment; the casino; the hotel,” she adds.

Conveniently, for those who want to tie the knot, a 100-seat capacity, elegant yet charming wedding chapel beckons. Throw in a full staff, a host of services, an array of wedding packages and special room rates, why look anywhere else?

Whether guests are meeting attendees, honeymooners, newlyweds or longtime partners, the resort delivers the sizzle—as well as the steak—in more ways than one….With ten, including fine dining, restaurants, the state of being finicky is taboo on these premises.

“I hear all the time about people who have been coming here forever,” Melissa adds.

The allure, indeed, is contagious; the list of leisure activities, exhaustive. The Grand Theater, itself, offers a variety of shows and attracts a phenomenal spectrum of headliner entertainment. The 1,800-seat arena, in fact, houses the largest stage in the world, which doesn’t mean things can’t get personal.

“Last year someone in our marketing office proposed to his girlfriend on stage at one of the concerts that we were having,” Melissa recalls.

Offstage, gaming, 80,000 square feet of it, is part of the resort’s namesake and the resort holds title as the largest casino north of Las Vegas. Let’s see, what else?...A cinema multiplex, a 50-lane championship bowling center, outdoor thrill rides, aqua golf range and for kids of all ages, a 40,000-square-foot video game/parlor game/simulator rides/laser tag arcade. In the future, patrons can anticipate the construction of America’s largest indoor water park.

As far as mixing business with pleasure (a must on these premises!), the resort provides 200,000 square feet for meeting and convention space.

Day-trippers have many options too. Melissa says, “We are nestled in the Grand Sierras, so there’s tons of outdoor adventure activities to take part in.” With access to over 40 golf courses, 18 legendary ski resorts, hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, kayaking, equestrian trails and excellent fishing and boating opportunities, she adds, “We have the concierge service called Grand Sierra Adventures that a lot of people take advantage of.”

For an exciting, memorable meeting, remember Sierra Grand, the first-ever and still foremost meeting destination in northern Nevada.
